William Morris The poems of

William Morris The Wood Beyond the World by Morris, Fiction, Classics, Fantasy, Fairy Tales, Folk Legends & Mythology

James Blish noted that Morris's style was a successful recapturing of the style of Sir Thomas Malory, "all the way down to the marginal glosses and the nonstop compound sentences hitched together with scores of semicolons. He also recaptured much of the poetry; and if the reader will make the small effort necessary to accommodate himself to the rhythm of the style, he will find both it and the story rewarding."The Wood Beyond the World was first published in 1894 and its author, William Morris is often considered one of the authors who aided in the growth of fantasy, utopian literature and science fiction. C.S. Lewis cites William Morris as one of his favorite authors and J.R.R. Tolkein admits to being influenced greatly by Morris' fantasies.

Ingrid Hanson William Morris and the Uses of Violence, 1856-1890

'William Morris and the Uses of Violence, 1856-1890' combines a close reading of Morris's work with historical and philosophical analysis in order to argue, contrary to prevailing critical opinion, that his writings demonstrate an enduring commitment to an ideal of violent battle. The work examines Morris's representations of violence in relation to the wider cultural preoccupations and political movements with which they intersect, including medievalism, Teutonism, and the visionary, fractured socialism of the 'fin de siècle'.

William Morris, A. J. Wyatt The Tale of Beowulf by Fiction, Fantasy, Fairy Tales, Folk Legends & Mythology

THE TIMELESS FANTASY AUTHOR AND THE TIMELESS CLASSICWhen J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis spoke about their fantasy roots, the name William Morris always arose as their fantasy forefather.William Morris, of course, is the author of the classic Well at World's End, the epic fantasy is the foundation of modern High Fantasy.William Morris was famous for more than fantasy: A true Victorian ball of creative energy, he was a master of design and other kinds of literature -- including poetry. The man was a true polymath, creating floral textiles and wallpapers, painting, creating metalwork, stained glass, jewelry, sculpture, and furniture; at one point he even metamorphosed to become a political firebrand, and published a Socialist political paper. But these days we remember him most clearly as an author. And this wonderful book is William Morris and A.J. Wyatt's translation of the greatest fantasy of all time, Beowulf. Here are the greatest monsters of all time -- Grendel and Grendel's mother. Here are the bracing words of the greatest saga. And here is the hero of heroes, the Anglo-Saxon warrior who saved his people from the forces of cold and darkness -- Beowulf!

Certainly there is a certain correspondence, just as the semihuman enemies are strikingly similar to Tolkein's orcs . . .

William Graham Sumner Robert Morris. The Financier and the Finances of American Revolution, Vol. 2

Robert Morris' tombstone states that he was "The Financier"; officially, however, he was Superintendent of Finance. Whatever his title, Robert Morris played an integral role in financing the American Revolution, and Yale Professor William G. Sumner examines Morris' life and actions to enhance our understanding of the finances of the young nation. In Volume II of a two-volume work, Sumner begins with the events of 1781, when Morris anticipated receiving loans from Spain. From there, Sumner looks at Morris' attempts to secure loans from other nations, his unpopularity and resignation, and the organization of the treasury. Sumner also covers the Bank War of 1785-1786, the Commercial Convention and the Constitutional Convention, Morris' career in the U.S. Senate, and his social standing and business dealings. What should be noted is that while Morris helped to finance the Revolution, he spent three years in prison for personal debts.WILLIAM GRAHAM SUMNER was a professor of political and social science at Yale University and became known as a Social Darwinist and advocate of the laissez faire principle in economics. Besides writing a number of books on sociology, history, and economics, he was also influential in the movement to modernize the American university system.

In Glasier’s personal account of William Morris he reveals a side too often overlooked. This is an account of Morris’s contribution to the early days of Socialism by a fellow Socialist. Glasier notes: ‘Morris was a Socialist by reason of his whole intellectual and moral construction, and whatever circumstances eventually led him to realise and to proclaim himself a Socialist, and there were doubtless many – his Socialism was none the less a necessary expression of his whole nature.

William Morris The Collected Letters of Morris, Volume IV. 1893-1896

These volumes bring to a close the only comprehensive edition of the surviving correspondence of William Morris (1834-1896), a protean figure who exerted a major influence as poet, craftsman, master printer, and designer. Volumes III and IV, taken together, give in detail the comments and observations that articulate his problematic political and artistic stands and equally problematic position within the aesthetic movement as it developed in the 1890s. Most eloquently voiced also are the complexities of his troubled marriage and his devotion to his epileptic daughter, Jenny, and his other daughter, May. But dominating all these themes, organizing and structuring them, are the Kelmscott Press and the building of Morris's important library of medieval manuscripts and early printed books. The letters record the way in which the Press becomes not only the center of Morris's aesthetic ambitions and achievements but also the site for his closest human relations and for much of his connecting with the makers of early modernism. The letters in Volumes III and IV are thoroughly annotated, and through texts and notes provide a new assessment of Morris's career. Included also, as appendices to Volume IV, are two important documents: the first, never before published, is F. S. Ellis's Valuation List of Morris's library, made after Morris's death, and the second, never before reprinted, is the text of what was to be Morris's final essay on socialism, published ...
